Tomanek and Johnson Secure Duluth City Council Wins in Election
UPDATE: In a decisive election held on November 7, 2023, voters in Duluth have overwhelmingly chosen Terese Tomanek and Jordon Johnson for the at-large seats on the City Council. Tomanek, the incumbent Council President, secured her reelection with 10,504 votes, representing 34.3% of the total cast, while Johnson emerged victorious in his second bid for office, garnering 8,515 votes or 27.8%.
The outcome of this election is critical as it shapes the future leadership of Duluth, impacting key issues such as housing, economic development, and budget management. Tomanek, who has served since 2020, emphasized her commitment to continue fostering economic growth and maintaining essential city services.
“I’m excited to work with the next council,” Tomanek stated. “We have a great leader in our mayor, and we’re going to continue to move our city forward.” Her track record as a retired chiropractor and former chaplain has positioned her as a pragmatic voice in the budgeting process for the city.
Johnson, bringing extensive community service experience to the role, expressed gratitude for his supporters. “I am very excited to be a part of the council,” he said. His background as the associate director of the American Indian Community Housing Organization equips him to tackle pressing issues like the housing crunch and budget shortfalls.
Challenging their bids were Derek Medved, a former councilor, and Asher Estrin-Haire, both of whom failed to secure enough votes. Medved received 7,552 votes, or 24.66%, while Estrin-Haire trailed with 3,869 votes, accounting for 12.63% of the total. Medved, who previously resigned from the council, sought a comeback but fell short against the DFL-backed candidates.
Tomanek plans to prioritize housing and budget management while advocating for civility and kindness in governance. “Now that the election is over, I think we’re going to see a great movement in our country,” she added, highlighting the need for unity in a divided political climate.
Johnson echoed similar sentiments, stating that community safety and economic development were the foremost concerns expressed by voters during the campaign. “People should feel safe in their neighborhood or school,” he affirmed, signaling that these issues will be at the forefront of his agenda.
With the election results finalized, both Tomanek and Johnson are set to lead as Duluth navigates its future challenges, making their roles pivotal in the community’s growth and stability. As the new council convenes, residents will be eager to see how their strategies unfold in addressing the pressing needs of Duluth citizens.
Stay tuned for further developments as Tomanek and Johnson prepare to take office and implement their vision for the city.
