Honda Recalls 400,000 Civics Over Wheel Detachment Risk
Honda has announced a significant recall affecting over 400,000 Civic vehicles due to a defect that may lead to wheel detachment. The recall, which was confirmed on October 31, 2025, primarily impacts models manufactured between 2016 and 2021. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the defect as a result of a factory flaw where steel seat anchors for the aluminum wheels were improperly pressed.
According to Honda, this issue presents a serious safety risk, as the wheel nut may loosen, causing the wheel to detach while the vehicle is in motion. Such an event could lead to a loss of control, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Honda has stated, “Wheel detachment can cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of an accident or injury.”
Details of the Recall
The discovery of this defect dates back to a routine inspection in Japan in 2024, during which the problem was first identified. An investigation revealed that some wheels were mistakenly sent out as finished products due to an incident at a supplier’s factory in Italy. Honda has committed to inspecting all parts and wheels of the affected vehicles at no charge to owners at official dealerships.
To facilitate the recall process, Honda began notifying owners on October 31 and will continue communications until December 8. Vehicle owners can check if their vehicle is affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website. Additionally, Honda has established a customer service hotline at 1-888-234-2138 for any inquiries regarding the recall.
Impact on Consumers
Despite the seriousness of the recall, Honda has reported no injuries related to this defect and is not currently facing any class-action lawsuits. However, the company is involved in a separate legal issue concerning warranty repairs for defective 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines found in various models, including the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, and Acura RDX, produced from 2016 to 2022.
As the recall unfolds, Honda is emphasizing its commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. The company encourages all affected owners to take immediate action to ensure their vehicles are inspected and repaired as necessary. With the proactive measures being implemented, Honda aims to maintain trust among its customer base while addressing the potential risks associated with this defect.
